After all the difficulties worldwide of the last few months it was lovely to be back racing this week. The Happy Chappy ran at Uttoxeter in the 3m1f handicap chase on Monday, 6 July with Bryony Frost riding. Chappy has been feeling very well at home and very cheeky, so we were hopeful of a good run, although he can be tricky and think a little too much about what he’s doing when in a race. Bryony gave him a tremendous ride and they jumped superbly and travelled well throughout. They were just beaten into second place, but it was a good race for the class and time of year, and we were very happy with that. Chappy returned home thinking he was brilliant so we’ll keep him thinking that way and look forward to his next run. Well done team!
During lockdown we have spent our time backing the youngsters, cleaning, painting and doing all the jobs that usually get left. With the uncertainty about the resumption of racing at the start of lockdown we turned all the horses away and they enjoyed a lovely holiday in brilliant weather. They have now just come back into work and are getting back into the swing of things. They are certainly looking and feeling well. There have been one or two empty saddles! We’ll look forward to them getting to the racecourse in September.
It’s good to be back and although the new normal is different, at least we can make plans and targets for the horses, and look forward to the rest of the season.
